Spaceteam on iOS is the quintessential party game. Created by Henry Smith, a former BioWare programmer who left his job to pursue indie game development, Spaceteam can be recommended in the same breath as Rock Band, Twister, or Super Smash Bros.
Spaceteam‘s premise is simple. Each player is given a randomized control panel with various knobs, switches, dials, levers, and so forth. Every few seconds a new command will be displayed at the top of your screen, but will only remain there for a few moments. Your job is to relay these commands to your crew members who must perform the actions on their control panel within the allotted time. If done successfully, your ship advances to the next level. If not, your control panel will begin breaking apart requiring you to fix the controls while still attempting to relay commands and perform actions.
The fun (and chaos) occurs when each of your shipmates attempts to relay commands, perform actions, and inevitably fix control panels all at once. To add to that fun, the functions on your control panel are labeled in hilariously imaginative ways such as discharging Clip-jawed Fluxtrunions, setting the Copernicus Crane to 7, and pressing the Flushbypass button. Dr. Seuss would be proud.
Spaceteam is a simple, fun, and free party game to play with friends. Sessions can last several minutes to full marathons but average about ten minutes. All players must have their own iDevice (iPod, iPhone, or iPad) and be connected to the same network to play. Although the App store recommends ages 9+ for suggestive themes, these themes are anything but overt. Players of all ages can enjoy Spaceteam. It would be great to see a multi-person iteration of this type of game become available on a single tablet device. Mr. Smith’s future indie entries will definitely be ones to keep an eye out for.
